Congressional Black Caucus is founded, February 2, with 13 members.

On April 20 the Supreme Court rules 9ยข0 in Swann v. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education to uphold a court-ordered busing plan designed to achieve racial balance in a de jure segregated school system.

Jesse Jackson resigns from SCLC and announces on December 18 the formation of his own organization, Operation PUSH (People United to Save Humanity).
