(c. 1937- ) Taught science and English in the Philippines as a Peace Corps volunteer, 1962-63. Late in 1963 began journalism career as reporter for Ebony, where he worked until 1976, eventually becoming associate editor; published articles on subjects including Haiti, baseball player Roberto Clemente, and teenage delinquency. Also studied cultural anthropology at Roosevelt University (B.A., 1970), University of Illinois (M.A., 1971), and University of Indiana (Ph.D., 1984); wrote master's thesis on urbanization in Guinea and doctoral dissertation on smallholder farming in Jamaica. Published academic articles during the later 1980s on Jamaican agriculture. Lives in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts.
