(August 16, 1935-November 28, 1996) Born Arthur Malcolm Berman in New York City. Graduated from Antioch College in 1957. After college worked as reporter for Springfield, Ohio, Daily News and Sun (1957-59), Pasadena, California, Star News (1959-60), and Los Angeles Mirror News (1960-61). Joined staff of Los Angeles Times in 1962, working as reporter (1962-69), assistant metropolitan editor (1970-77), suburban editor (1978-82), "View" editor (1983-87), assistant national editor (1987-91), and assistant "Calendar" editor (1992-96). Shared Pulitzer Prize in 1966 for reporting on Watts riots, and 1969 Pulitzer Prize for series on municipal corruption.
