(June 6, 1906-June 27, 1957) Born Martin Daniel Richardson in Jacksonville, Florida. Began journalism career with Cleveland Call in 1925. Published Jacksonville World and Jacksonville Bulletin during 1930s; campaigned against police brutality and for equal voting rights. In 1934 reported on Marianna, Florida, lynching of Claude Neale; was chased for three days by mob. Worked as supervisor of records and on writers' projects for WPA in Florida and Massachusetts; lived briefly in Atlanta and New York. During part of the 1930s, all of the 1940s, and the early 1950s, lived in Boston, where he was managing editor of Boston Chronicle. Later returned to Cleveland, where he worked as Call and Post managing editor until his death.
