(June 27, 1921-June 29, 2001) Born in David Benjamin Bittan in Philadelphia; raised in Hammonton and Westmont, New Jersey. Graduated from Overbrook High School. Served in the army for three years during World War II, contributing reports to Stars and Stripes. Graduated from Temple University (B.S. 1948), where he majored in journalism and edited college newspaper; also did graduate work at Trinity University. Began journalism career as reporter for papers in San Antonio and Port Arthur, Texas. Returned to New Jersey to work for Trenton Times. Worked as reporter for Philadelphia Daily News from the mid-1950s until the late 1990s; contributed Philadelphia-area stories to New York Times and wire services. Also wrote jazz criticism for Downbeat, Variety, and Metronome. Died in Merion Station, Pennsylvania.
