(March 9, 1940- ) Born in Evanston, Illinois; grew up in suburbs of Chicago and New York. Attended Duke University. Worked as copyboy in New York Times Sunday department. Moved to Arizona in 1961, covering police beat and courthouse for Tucson Daily Citizen; also wrote detective fiction under a pseudonyms and worked as a stringer for Time-Life. Hired by Life in 1967; reported on Newark riots, the Vietnam War, rural America, and the criminal justice system. Since 1972, when Life first ceased publication, has worked as a freelance magazine and corporate photographer; was contributing photographer to People magazine for twenty years. Lives in Seattle.
