(November 10, 1948- ) Born in Duluth, Minnesota. During 1968 reported from Mississippi for Southern Courier, Alabama-based newspaper begun by civil rights workers. Graduated from Harvard in 1970 and received doctorate from University of California-Berkeley in 1984; taught at University of California-Davis, Tufts, and Princeton while in graduate school. Served as managing editor of International Security (1984-87). Author of articles in academic and policy journals, including studies on black politics in New South (1971) and American Political Science Review (1973), and two books: Guide to Methods for Students of Political Science (1997) and Causes of War: Power and the Roots of Conflict (1999). Currently associate professor of political science at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, specializing in international affairs and security studies.
