(February 14, 1930- ) Born in Hot Springs, Arkansas. Educated at University of Missouri School of Journalism. Began journalism career at Joplin, Missouri, Globe. From 1956 to 1964 worked as reporter for Arkansas Gazette; attended Harvard as Nieman fellow (1963-64). Joined staff of New York Times in 1965, reporting on civil rights movement; subsequently reported for the Times from Washington, as New Orleans-based national correspondent, and from London (1976-78). Taught journalism at University of Arkansas in Fayetteville (1979-95) Currently lives in Hogeye, Arkansas. Author of Looking for Hogeye (1986) and Faubus: The Life and Times of an American Prodigal (1997).
