Born Richard Jules Margolis in St. Paul, Minnesota; educated at the University of Minnesota (B.A., 1952; M.A., 1953). Edited and published Brooklyn Heights Press (1956-60); worked as editorial director of Lerner Newspapers in Chicago (1960-62), and as a freelance writer. Author of a number of books of poetry and fiction for children including Secrets of a Small Brother (1984), articles in Life, The Nation, New Leader, and other magazines, and books Something To Build On (1966), Homes of the Brave (1981), and Risking Old Age in America (1990). Died in New Haven, Connecticut.
