(June 19, 1942- ) Born Richard Michael Levine in Brooklyn, New York. Graduated from Wesleyan University in 1963; later did graduate work in Slavic languages at Columbia and spent a year (1967-68) in Warsaw. Worked as associate editor of New Leader (1969-70), associate editor of Newsweek, senior editor of Saturday Review (1972-73), and as a freelance journalist, publishing in magazines including Harper's, New York Times Magazine, Playboy, Rolling Stone, and Mother Jones. Taught journalism at University of California-Berkeley; worked as media columnist for New Times and Esquire. Currently lives in Berkeley, California. Author of Bad Blood: A Family Murder in Marin County (1982).
