(August 30, 1927- ) Born in Newport News, Virginia; grew up in church orphanage. Began career as police and court reporter for Wilson, North Carolina, Daily Times and reporter for Atlanta Constitution. Joined Newsweek in 1960 as civil rights correspondent. In 1965 became Los Angeles bureau chief; was seriously injured while reporting on Watts riots. Covered campaigns and political conventions for Newsweek. From 1978 to 1985 worked in television, as managing editor and on-air political editor for KNXT in Los Angeles; produced documentary Watts Revisited for CBS. From 1985 to 1987 was editor and publisher of California Business. Since 1988 has been president of Prime Time Communications, a media consulting firm. Author of The First Time (1975, with Anne Taylor Fleming).
